After being in the SEO industry for more than seven years, I can also tell you it depends on dozens of factors. A good SEO provider should look at a lot of things before putting together a proposal.

In this guide, I’m going to walk you through what SEO costs, the most common pricing models, the biggest factors that affect pricing, and some FAQs I’ll answer based on my own experience.

In my opinion, it’s only logical that SEO costs vary from country to country. In many cases, businesses choose to outsource SEO to agencies or freelancers in places where the economy and cost of living make services more affordable compared to the USA, the UK, or Canada.

Of course, that comes with both upsides and downsides, and it’s not always the best solution. However, I wanted to give you a clearer picture, so below I’ve put together some of the top countries by SEO cost.

Just to be clear, this research is based on common sources such as Clutch, DesignRush, and similar B2B platforms where agencies publicly list their pricing.

I also reviewed other sources and even checked freelancer platforms before putting this list together.

Let’s confess that the USA is one of the first markets you look at, and honestly, it makes sense. A huge number of well-known SEO agencies, consultants, and freelancers operate there, and in many cases, US-based providers charge more than teams in many other countries.

That usually comes down to higher business expenses, salaries, and overall living costs. At the same time, the US market is also very competitive, so pricing can vary a lot depending on the agency’s reputation, experience, niche, and the actual scope of work.

Below, I’ve tried to give you a realistic look at the average SEO cost in the USA based on the types of prices you’ll usually see across agencies, consultants, and service providers.

Industry is one of the biggest factors that affects the overall cost of SEO, and I’m already going to talk about that below. Personally, I’ve worked across dozens of industries and sectors, including B2B SEO, eCommerce, SaaS, service businesses, construction, and manufacturing SEO, and I can confirm that pricing can change quite a lot from one industry to another.

Below, I’ve listed the main industries where I have hands-on experience and where I’ve worked with at least one client for a year or more.

I think it’s still a bit early to put a clear estimated price on AI SEO services, because in most cases, the fundamentals are still the same. Usually, it’s more about adding a few extra tactics that can help improve your visibility in platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and even AI Overviews.

So if I told you that AI SEO costs X, I’d probably just confuse you. Instead, I think it makes more sense to show you the main service costs that can help improve your AI SEO visibility.

AI SEO pricing is still not standardized. Some agencies include it inside traditional SEO retainers, while others price it as a separate service for AI Overviews, ChatGPT visibility, Perplexity citations, LLM content audits, brand mention tracking, and entity optimization.

Frankly, I’m not a big fan of SEO packages, because, as I’ve already said a few times, and probably will say again, it all depends. So when I see a provider offering something like “5 links, 3 pieces of content, and maintenance,” my reaction is basically, “WTF?”

I think packages make more sense for things like link-building, content optimization, or maybe SEO audits. But when it comes to monthly retainers, I’m convinced you need a custom plan.

If you’re planning to invest in SEO services, I’d say a fair average is around $1,000 to $1,800 per month for an experienced freelancer and $2,000 to $4,000 per month for a trusted SEO agency. I’m talking here about service fees only, not extra costs like paid backlink placements, content writing, or similar add-ons.

Before giving you any serious estimate, a service provider should first review your website and understand a few key things, like the scope of work, your current SEO health, your goals, how fast you want to grow, and also your industry, KPIs, and overall expectations.

Freelance vs. Agency SEO Costs

Freelancers are usually more affordable and flexible, while agencies usually cost more because they include strategy, content, technical SEO, reporting, link-building support, and a wider team. The right option depends on how much execution you need, how competitive your niche is, and whether you need one expert or a full SEO team.

It depends on what you need. If you’re looking for full SEO services, then a monthly retainer is usually the right option, and honestly, that’s what most companies prefer. But if you just need a one-time SEO audit, or let’s say 10 links per month, then hourly pricing or a fixed project fee can also make sense.

For example, our agency usually works on fixed project fees or monthly retainers, depending on the situation, and we rarely offer hourly engagements. But again, it all comes down to the specific case and what the client expects.

You can also start with hourly services for a trial period and then move to a monthly retainer later if it makes sense.

In-house SEO usually gives you more control and faster internal communication, but the real cost is higher than salary alone. Outsourced SEO is more flexible because you pay for the level of support you need, whether that’s strategy, audits, content, technical SEO, or full execution.

How SEO Costs Have Changed Over the Years?

I think in the last 8–10 years, the cost of SEO hasn’t changed a lot. However, over the years, it has become much more challenging to rank in the top organic positions because of fierce competition, and maybe that’s why you need to invest more just to stay in the game.

On the other hand, because of various AI tools, millions of brands now invest less in manual content writing and similar stuff, and that might have reduced the cost. However, if some companies rely too much on AI automation or LinkedIn success stories, half of them end up paying twice later when switching from cheap to trusted partners.

How Much Does Enterprise SEO Cost?

Enterprise SEO usually costs much more than standard SEO services, and honestly, that makes total sense. In most cases, I would say enterprise SEO can start from around $5,000 per month and go well beyond $15,000 or even $20,000+ per month, depending on the scope.

What makes enterprise SEO expensive is not just the size of the website. It’s also the level of strategy, reporting, coordination, and execution involved.

I’d say enterprise SEO is one of those areas where cheap pricing almost always creates problems later. If a large brand wants serious growth, they usually need a provider that can handle technical SEO, content strategy, internal linking, reporting, and business communication at a high level. So yes, it costs more, but in many cases, it needs to.

 

How Much Does SEO Maintenance Cost?

SEO maintenance usually costs less than full SEO services, but again, it depends on what “maintenance” means. If by maintenance you mean keeping an eye on rankings, fixing small issues, updating metadata, checking Search Console, monitoring technical health, and making small monthly improvements, then I’d say it often starts from around $500 to $800 per month for smaller websites.

But sometimes people say “SEO maintenance” when they actually mean ongoing SEO work, and that is a different thing. If content updates, technical fixes, internal linking, page optimization, reporting, strategy, and competitor tracking are all included, then the cost can easily go higher.

At that point, it’s not really maintenance anymore. It’s just ongoing SEO under a softer name.

Personally, I think SEO maintenance makes sense for websites that already have a strong foundation and just want to protect what they’ve built. But if the website has weak content, technical problems, poor structure, or low rankings, maintenance alone usually won’t be enough. In that case, you need a monthly retainer, not just maintenance.

How Much Does an SEO Audit Cost?

A proper SEO audit usually costs somewhere between $1,000 and $5,000+, and in some cases, even more. It depends on the size of the website, the depth of the audit, and who is doing it. A small website with a few service pages is one thing.

A large site with thousands of URLs, indexation issues, international targeting, and a technical mess is a completely different story.

To be honest, I’m not a fan of super cheap audits, because in many cases, they are just automated exports from tools with a few comments added on top.

A good SEO audit should look at technical issues, on-page problems, internal linking, content gaps, crawl issues, indexation, and sometimes even competitor insights.

 

How Much Does On-Page SEO Cost?

My friend, on-page SEO can be priced in different ways, so the cost depends on the setup. Some providers charge per page, some charge hourly, and some include it inside a monthly retainer. On average, I would say on-page SEO can cost anywhere from $50 to $300+ per page, depending on the quality, competition, and how much work is needed.

I think on-page SEO is one of the most underestimated parts of SEO. A lot of businesses spend money on backlinks or content production while their key pages are still poorly optimized.

 

How Much Does Local SEO Cost?

Local SEO usually costs a bit less than national or enterprise SEO, but again, that depends on the market, the city, and how competitive the niche is. In many cases, local SEO can cost around $500 to $2,500 per month. For very competitive local industries like legal, dental, HVAC, or roofing in major cities, the cost can go much higher.

The reason local SEO pricing varies so much is that some businesses only need the basics, while others need a lot more. One company may just need Google Business Profile optimization, local landing page improvements, citations, review strategy, and a few location pages.

Another may need a full local content strategy, link-building, technical fixes, and city-by-city expansion.

The challenge with eCommerce SEO is that you are often dealing with category pages, product pages, filters, faceted navigation, internal linking, duplicate content issues, crawl waste, collection structures, and conversion-focused optimization at the same time.

 

How Much Does SEO Cost for a Small Business?

For a small business, SEO costs from $500 to $2,000 per month on average, although in more competitive markets it can definitely go beyond that. A lot depends on the niche, the location, the website’s current condition, and how aggressive the business wants to be with growth.

Some small businesses only need the basics. Maybe their website is small, their competition is weak, and they just need a solid local SEO setup, a few page improvements, and some ongoing support.

In those cases, the cost can stay relatively affordable. But if the business is in a tough niche or wants to grow fast, then the budget usually needs to go up.

I think small businesses should not focus only on finding the cheapest SEO option. They should focus on finding the most realistic one.

White-label SEO costs can vary a lot, but from what I’ve seen, hourly rates usually range from around $20 to $100+ per hour, depending on the provider, country, and the type of work involved.

I think white-label SEO is a great solution for agencies that want to scale without building a full in-house team too fast. But I also think it’s one of those services where going too cheap can hurt your reputation fast.

If the work is weak, delayed, or clearly outsourced in a bad way, your client usually won’t care who did it. They’ll blame you.

In many cases, businesses outsource SEO to freelancers or agencies in countries where service costs are lower than in the USA, UK, or Canada. Honestly, that’s one of the main reasons outsourced SEO is so popular. It can give companies access to solid talent at a more affordable rate.

However, it all depends on the provider, the quality standards, communication, systems, and how seriously the business is committed to achieving results.

I think outsourced SEO can work really well if you know what you need and choose carefully.

However, if someone outsources just because the offer is cheap, that usually creates problems later. In my opinion, outsourced SEO should not be judged only by the monthly fee or hourly rate.

 

The Biggest Factors Behind SEO Pricing

There are dozens of factors out there that directly or indirectly affect SEO cost. Sometimes, it’s even hard to explain that to clients because some of them don’t fully get what you mean, or they think you’re trying to mislead them.

You can’t just say, “Pay $1,200 per month,” without understanding what they need and expect, without doing at least a quick competitor analysis and market research, or even without looking at the current SEO health of the website.

So, below are the main factors I’ll try to explain that affect the overall cost of SEO, believe it or not.

Competition & Target Market

One of the top factors that shape the cost of SEO is competition and the market you’re trying to rank in.

First of all, let’s understand why competition is important. Let’s say you’re trying to rank for a keyword like “Best B2B SaaS SEO agency.” To rank in the top 3, 5, or even 10 organic SERP results, I have to outrank top competitors, right?

But they already have a great reputation, hundreds of backlinks, maybe hundreds of expert-written content pieces, reviews, and a lot of other stuff.

So that means I have to invest in more or less the same level of off-page SEO and content, and that increases the costs.

I think everything is clear now.

Regarding the target market, the global picture is pretty much the same. If you’re trying to rank for a keyword in the USA, the competition is usually tough, while in countries like NZ, for example, depending on the industry and keywords, there may be almost no competition.

However, at the same time, the keyword volume and the revenue you can generate are also lower.

 

Goals & Timeline

Whether you want to rank in the top 4 within a 6-month period or 18 months changes how much you should invest in SEO. Whether your goal is to generate leads through SEO, or just get traffic from low-KD keywords, or maybe rank for one very specific keyword, is also a completely different case.

I mean, if you want faster results, you usually need more backlinks, more content, and more organized campaign management, and that naturally comes at a higher cost.

These are some of the main areas where you may need to invest two or even a few times more within a specific period if you don’t want to wait.

I’m not saying results are guaranteed just because you invest twice as much, but of course, you should feel the difference when you publish 15 high-quality pieces of content instead of 3, and build 20 links per month instead of 4.

 

Industry

Next, I want to talk about industries and how they affect SEO pricing. But again, let’s start with examples. If you’re running a healthcare SEO campaign, you should work with doctors for content writing or at least content review, and of course, healthcare writers charge more than lifestyle writers, especially if the cheaper ones are just writing with AI.

The same goes for backlinks. In a more general industry, you might find a good backlink for $200, while in healthcare, the cost per link is usually much higher. A high-quality link there might easily cost you around $450 to $600.

The same thing happens in grey niches like casinos, CBD, and similar spaces, where backlinks and content costs are high, and these two are usually some of the biggest cost definers.

In some cases, you’ll also notice that an SEO agency charges more if you’re in a law niche, real estate, or a similar industry, just because everything is more complicated.

 

Website Size and Complexity

I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel, but a website with 50 pages is much easier to manage than a website with 500 or 5,000 pages, and I’m sure you agree with me.

If you’re running an international SEO campaign across multiple languages and regions, that’s one thing. Just targeting LA for a small coffee shop is something completely different.

The same goes for the website itself. A site with dozens of advanced technical SEO issues, duplicate content, and a less popular CMS is a few times more complicated than a newly launched website on WordPress.

Do you see where I’m coming from? I mean, your provider should evaluate your website first of all before giving you any estimate, and the cost can change a lot depending on factors like the ones I highlighted.

 

Scope of Services

Whether you need full SEO services, an SEO audit, or just a link-building package affects the retainer cost. It also helps define which payment model makes more sense. In many cases, you’ll also notice that a lot of providers, including our agency, offer some discounts if you go with full SEO services or larger link-building packages.

For example, if you’re running a local SEO campaign, your provider will spend less time compared to working with a national brand. If you have one location, that’s one thing. If you have three locations, that’s already different.

I’m not talking only about service fees, but also about the resources you may need to invest in, like more links or more content.

Finally, it’s obviously easier to audit a website with 100 pages than one with 1,000 pages, especially if a big part of those pages is blog content or anything else that needs manual review.

 

Experience of a Service Provider

I’m sure I won’t shock you if I say that a trusted SEO agency or a freelancer with years of experience will charge more than a provider with almost no reviews, referrals, or SEO case studies.

I’m not saying high-cost providers guarantee results, and I’m not saying new agencies are always bad, but that’s pretty normal, in my opinion.

Sometimes, it makes sense to outsource SEO, or first learn how to hire an SEO provider properly, or even just compare the average SEO costs by country like I shared above.

 

Is a Low Monthly SEO Fee Always a Red Flag?

I would not say a low monthly fee is a red flag by itself. However, it’s important to understand the reason behind it. For example, if your provider says you need $650 per month for everything, including content, links, and their service, that’s a red flag.

But if they charge $650 for their service only, and you still need to invest separately in content, links, and other things, that can make sense. However, you should verify the credibility of the provider very carefully.

Especially today, SEOs already have a lot on their shoulders, and most providers will charge at least $1,000 per month.

Also, make sure low fees don’t mean cheap links or AI-written BS content.

 

Can I Start SEO With a Smaller Budget and Increase It Later?

In some rare cases, you may also need to bring in an SEO consultant if, after working with your provider for a while, you still don’t see results, or if the site gets hit by a penalty or a sudden traffic drop.
